An Icon

First off, I want to tell you to check out Connecting with Stephanie.  She is amazing and fun.  That woman tells the best stories and was sweet enough to let me guest post for her--what a doll!

So, on to the madness of today.
Have you ever heard of someone so epic, so completely amazing, people whisper about their awesomeness?  For some, you may have whispered about Johnny Stamos, Marilyn Monroe, Bush, Paul Newman, Brittney Spears (God forbid), or that little man on "Willow."

Others of you may lie saying, "I'm above icons."
Yeah right!  To you I say, "Shame.  Someday you might be judged for those false words.  I hope you like fire and brimstone!"
So back to the point, as kids we all had certain famous people we looked up to.  When I was little, my hero was God (you can't get more famous than Him) and a close second runner-up was Rainbow Brite.  She had all the moves.  She could fight, she could sing.  Heck, she could even walk on rainbows.

Well, now that I've grown up--you've grown up and we're bloggers--I think quite a few of us look up to one famous lady.
I know you've heard of her--practically everyone has.  Let me give you a hint, she doesn't have a blog (yet), but she leaves some of the best comments ever.  For example, she left this comment on my blog yesterday: "How big is a bull's brain? And the answer--I don't know. No one's ever seen one!"
She's epic, hilarious, witty.  If this woman ever starts a blog, she'll be bombarded with fans.

Yes, folks, I'm talking about fishducky!  I had the pleasure of talking to her on the phone.  I got enough Rocky Mountain Oysters to call her.  (Well, I've been calling a lot of people lately--what's new.)  Anyway, let me tell you, she is awesome.  It's rare to meet an icon and think even more highly of them after talking to them.
She really is one of the sweetest people I've ever met.
You know, it's rare to come into a community like this and feel as if you've made friends.  I started a blog because my son kept destroying my journal--I figured he'd have a tough time destroying a blog.  But now it's more than that; I feel like I'm part of a network of generous, caring people.
I just had to say "thank you" to all of you.  Your comments and continual kindness have meant so much to me.  I never thought I'd say this, but I'm glad The Zombie Elf used to destroy everything.  Without his shenanigans I might not be here and I wouldn't have met all of you.
    Thanks again for everything!

   Who is/was your icon?

  1. Mine was Ozzy Osbourne back in the 80's when he was a lunatic and the press hated him. These days he is all cuddly and advertises butter for crying out loud.

  2. I still love Punky Brewster. She was everything cool to a young black chick from the suburbs of Sacramento.

  4. I started as a joke because my cat has such a personality that I figured I'd rift off the cat and the hat, never expected to last this long, interesting how one little endeavor can create such a thing.

  5. Fishducky certainly is rapidly becoming a blogging community icon. How wonderful that you got to speak to her. When I first began noticing her comments, she came across as frivolous and exceedingly funny. Since then, I've seen her incredibly caring, sweet and compassionate side. And, her feisty side! I know she claims to be 'too old' to start a blog, but she's actually doing us all a disservice by limiting her exposure to comments on the blogs of everyone else. I, too, wish she'd jump in and set up her own blog, even if she just did it as an exercise to see how quickly she'd attract followers :)

I have not yet been blogging for a full year and yet I'm amazed at the way in which my world has opened up and feel incredibly privileged to have met so many talented, interesting and special fellow bloggers worldwide. You and Melynda rank very high on my own list of favourites :)

As you can see, I've ignored the question you posed :) Does that mean a fiery brimstone ending for me? I do hope not!

  7. "MIrror, mirror on the wall, who's the fairest icon of them all?" I just don't know.
As a teenager, I thought no one could be wiser than Emily Dickinson or Caryll Houselander.
In my twenties I thought St. Philip Neri was the closest I could ever come to someone who knew the healing and redemptive power of humor.
In my thirties--Robert Kennedy, Hubert Humphery, and the poet Robert Frost
In my forties--Flip Wilson and his Geraldine skits and Vice-President Mondale from Minnesota
In my fifties--the men who lived as HIV positive or with AIDS with whom I visited each week at the St. Paul hospital.
In my sixties--Hillary Clinton and the poet Mary Oliver
In my seventies--President Obama and the poets Ted Kooser, Billy Collins, and Wistawa Szymborska and the novelists Diana Gabaldon, Kent Haruf, and Leif Enger
And---at 75 I have discovered so many wonderful bloggers--you Elisa as well as Melynda and Friko and Desiree and DJan and Rita and Stephanie and Michelle and Deb, and Sandi, and Mary, and Kario, and Carrie, and Linda, and Jan, and Nancy, and Jerri, and Sally, and Jen, and Susan and Tracy Jo . . . and I know there are others but I'm named out here because so many fellow bloggers have been kind enough and generous enough to come to my blog and comment.
And of course, at 75, I'm forging a connection with fishducky--I so hope she begins to blog. She's a dear delight.

  8. In my childhood, I looked up to St. Theresa because I wanted to be a nun. As the years went by, it was clearer to me I wanted to be a vampire slayer; Buffy was my hero.
Jane Austin and Erma Bombeck, working as a ghostly team, inspire me to keep writing. Those two, I tell ya...

It's funny you mention the community in the blogsphere being friends. I was thinking something similar the other night, and being thankful to have such funny people to banter back and forth with...

    Good post, Veal!

  10. As far as me starting a blog goes, a quote from General William Tecumseh Sherman seems appropriate--"If nominated I will not run, if elected I will not serve."--but thank you, anyway!

  12. fishducky is my Mom and I agree that you all should get her to start a blog. Years ago in the Stone Age, when I was in college, fishducky hand wrote a letter including newspaper clippings and comic strips which she sent out to the family and it was great. She is definately an icon and deserves all of the praise she gets :)

  13. Has to be Linda Carter as Wonder Woman. Funny thing too...my husband went to high school with her! She was my favorite tin lunch pale next to Holly Hobby. Are you too young to know those?

Oh, I'm supposed to give you a cow joke for your brother, but I don't have one!!

  14. Desiree,
You are very talented and sweet so . . .
God will forgive you LOL! I love how at least 1/3 of my posts refer to Heaven and Hell ;) So silly.

    Blake,
That is really neat about the comic strips and clippings. You're lucky to have her ;)

    Mommy LaDy Club,
I used to LOVE Holly Hobby. :0)

  16. Branden's childhood hero was Donatello...the ninja turtle, not the sculptor. He said that despited Donatello having the lamest weapon, he was the smartest so he could invent things.
I wanted to be like Jem...who doesn't want to be truly, truly, truly outrageous!?! (now I have a husband cracking up because he didn't know who she was and I just showed him the youtube intro song)

  18. Love the Fishducky! Her comments are the best...and yes, she needs to blog herself!...but then she wouldn't have time to comment on our posts...so scratch that! :)

And thanks again for the guest post! You were fantastic...as usual
