I suffer from compression

Unfortunately, I have the stomach flu today. I've probably been fighting it off for a few days because sleep seems too fleeting and blogging has nearly killed me with headaches. But I'm almost to my 365 day straight goal and I can't quit now.

In the middle of the night I took some medicine and after going to sleep, I had THE WEIRDEST dream. I've had some strange ones lately, but this took the cake.
A little man stood in front of me. "What you suffer from, my dear, is compression."
Photobucket
    "Excuse me?" I said.
"Compression," he cleared his throat. "Everyone talks about depression. Well who cares if you're feeling a little lower than normal. Compression is what you need to be worried about."
In my dream I just gawked at him and even thought to myself, I'm never taking cold medicine again.
"Assuming you aren't completely nutty," I said. "What is compression?"
    "I'd worried about that."
    "What?"
"That you'd be as dumb as you look. Compression is far worse than depression. You feel as if everything is closing in. Too many worries; too much on your plate until you feel out of control . . ."  He straightened his back, proud of himself.  "Compression."
"And how am I supposed to fix this, oh mighty, SHORT one."
    "Simple," he smiled. "Become unpressed."
"Like a shirt that hasn't been ironed?! Oh this is rich."
"Laugh all you want," he said. "But there comes a time in everyone's lives where they can't do everything. Choices must be made. Things must be cut from your life, or you'll stay compressed FOREVER, until implosion occurs."
With that he vanished and I woke up sweating. The Scribe brought me a thermometer because it was morning and she'd apparently been hovering over me for awhile. "What's your temperature," she asked me after I checked.
"102.2," I said. "This whole thing is making me feel so tired . . . And utterly compressed."
"What does that mean?" she asked.
I just looked at her. "it's hard to explain, but some day I'm sure you'll understand."
"Are you really going to write a blog today?"
"Yes." I nodded. "I've almost blogged for a year straight, and I'm not going to mess this up now.  Compression, sickness or not, when I set a goal, I accomplish it or die trying."

  1. I think it's brilliant! You need to let yourself expand a bit. Hope you went back to bed after posting this. And you don't think I could CATCH what you've got by reading it, do you? :-)

  2. Dear Elisa,
Brilliant, not your psyche is telling you what you need to hear. Remember how I voted--blog twice a week. Get rid of compression! Unpress!

    Peace.

  3. Oh my dear, you do need some rest! I admire your tenacity, and agree that you're so close to the finish line you don't want to quit now! Sleep, and dream up the last few blog posts you need!

  4. I hope you feel better soon, Elisa.
And WOW, that's a dream full of real-life application if I ever heard one!

  5. Whenever I'm sick, I always have the weirdest dreams too. Mine are usually action packed so then I'm guaranteed to feel as if I didn't actually sleep at all. I hope you feel better soon!

  6. I think I met this little feller in a dream once but he didn't say anything profound. He was smoking a cigarette and drinking a cup of cofee and told me to come back when he was off his break. I didn't bother.

  7. You do realize that you now have to write a book with this little fellow traveling around in people's dreams giving them advice, right?

It's good to know I'm not the only person with strange dreams. I admire your courage in sharing them :D

  8. Can't give up now. Your goal is in sight. But if you keep feeling compressed, get an air pump and blow the compression up. Then it will burst and off goes the stuff that compressed.

  9. Feel better soon! Stomach bugs are no fun.

However, there is much wisdom in your nighttime visitor's words. I have a few friends (and family members) who suffer from "compression". In short, they neither know how to chill-out nor understand that it's ok to say "No".

Unfortunately they're all on the fast track to mental breakdowns (a few have already gotten there). Not a fun place to be.

There's something to be said about occasionally realizing the weight of the world need not be on your shoulders and just relaxing a bit.

  14. Adorable story, O adorable one! Heed the sage advice of the little stud muffin in your dream! I sent him over to see you--no need to thank me.

PS--He asked me to tell you that he is actually tall (for his species).

  15. Aw I hope that you get well real quick, before your dreams diagnose you with even worse fake diseases than compression! hahaha

  16. Sounds like you just need some rest and medicine. Feel better soon!

I've had the feeling of compression before, even if that wasn't the reality. Hang in there; it'll get better. You have some awesome kids and an awesome husband and family to help you through it :)

  19. Compression. I know I have had bouts of that, myself.
Take it easy. When you start feeling better--disinfect your keyboard and either boil or buy a new toothbrush. I'm just sayin'. ;)

  25. I don't even know how you will have made it through 365 days! That's something to be proud of. I think I've been compressed, as well. So tired. You're my hero!

  26. Oh no! You poor thing:( I hope you feel better soon. How do you remember such detail of your dreams like that? I always have only snippets that I can't even explain if I tried;)

  27. Love the term compression. What a wild dream. Sorry you had to have it when you were so sick. Just read your most recent post. Glad you're mom was able to help. I don't know what I'd do sometimes without my neighbor mom, Joy Joy.

  28. That makes perfect sense. I suffer from compression too and the unreachable goal to be able to do everything for everyone by myself. THanks for the reminder I am NOT a super hero nor does anyone expect me to be! I hope you fell better soon.

  29. I quite often suffered from compression when my children were young.

    Love,
Janie, who is working her way through posts backasswards
